Sharing My Story

Studio City South_Janaury 2019_FINAL_Page_1.png

This month I shared the story of creating WonderTent Parties with Studio City South Magazine. As anyone who knows me will attest, I’m not a huge fan of having my photo taken, so to be featured as their cover story was both an honour and daunting experience, but photographer Hylah Hedgepeth was amazing and had me feeling comfortable being in front of the camera - well, as comfortable as I’m likely to ever be.

For me, it was a chance to share my story. To talk about the joys and struggles of starting your own business. To chat about the fears of leaving a secure corporate job and taking the leap to follow a dream of running a business that gives back. I also share my story of adopting my teenage daughter and the wonderful work of Kidsave, and how adopting her was the genesis for creating WonderTent Parties. It’s my aim that with every WonderTent Parties experience that we always leave our clients feeling wow’d. I strive to make every sleepover, every slumber party, every glamping experience an unforgettable one. One that creates memories for everyone involved. Memories and moments that stick with them for life. A moment of joy and wonder they cherish, and can fondly look back on.

And as I share in the article it’s also an opportunity to give back, with a portion of the proceeds from every experience being donated to Kidsave through our Good Intent program. It’s my hope that in bringing joy and wonder to families we can all help older youth in foster care find their own joy and wonder through forever families and life long connections with adult mentors. And this is just part of the great work Kidsave do.

Wow, It's December already! (Where has the time gone?)
So I guess that means it's time to decorate the tree, whip up some eggnog and start wrapping some presents. And of course, you need some holidays tunes.

Well we've got you covered with A Wonder-ful & Happy Holidays playlist of over 2 hours of the perfect songs for the holidays.

Looking for some classics? We've got those with "White Christmas" from Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole singing "The Christmas Song." Want to get rocking around the Christmas tree? Then crank up the hits from U2, Coldplay and Tom Petty. We've got some Christmas cheer with The Jackson 5, Destiny's Child and The Temptations. And modern takes from Sam Smith, Meghan Trainor, Fifth Harmony, Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande will have everyone in the family singing along.

We've also included some of our famiy's personal favorites too. Who can go past the classic, "Last Christmas" from Wham! - that's my pick. Our daughter loves Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You." And hearing Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime" always brings a smile to my husbands face. Hopefully this collection of songs does the same for you.

How WonderTent Parties came to be.

Meet our head of Research & Development.

So here we are now a few months into WonderTent Parties. It’s been great being able to spread a little wonder and I’m thankful for all the support we’ve been getting. Many people have asked me how WonderTent Parties came to be.

So in the spirit of sharing, especially this month (which will become obvious in a moment) here is the story of WonderTent Parties.

It all started with my husband's and my desire to adopt a child. We both knew we wanted to adopt and felt a natural gravitation towards adopting an older child. At the time, I was working as a VP in Corporate Talent Management and felt quite unfulfilled by the corporate merry-go-round. I wanted to do something that gave back and allowed me the freedom to build a family.

So with a little exploration we found the wonderful people of KIDSAVE, a charity set up to help older foster youth find lasting connections and forever families. One of the things we loved about KIDSAVE is that connections form organically through monthly outings and events and that the kids have a say in who they want to know better. It was at one of these outings that we met a shy, funny, smart 12-year-old girl named Celia. And our lives changed for the better in that moment.

Over a series of month’s we got to know each other and soon she started to spend the weekends with us. It wasn’t too long before we all realized we wanted this to be permanent. And so, in the summer of 2016, Celia moved in with us as our foster daughter and made us a family.

As we approached our first Christmas together we asked Celia to write up a wish list of Christmas gifts. The raft of wishes ranged from the humble (a pair of socks) to the wildly outlandish (a swimming pool.) But the thing that struck home for me were her two “Mandatories” - to be adopted and to have a sleepover with her new cousins.

The adoption, as we are finding, takes its time but the sleepover didn’t have to.

So I set about figuring out how to make a wonderful, magical, memory-making sleepover. And drawing influence from my sister and a concept that originated back in our home country of Australia, I struck upon the idea of elevating the humble sleepover into a truly special event.

And so WonderTent Parties was born, with the intent to make every sleepover, every one of life’s celebrations big or small, a truly memorable one that creates connections that last a lifetime. I wanted to make it hassle-free for parents and to supply everything needed for sleepover magic to occur.

We dreamed up the Sleep Over for the ultimate 5-star glam experience. To make sure the little ones didn’t miss out we created the Slumber Under giving them all the fun of a slumber party without the overnight stay. And for teens (and the young at heart) we created the Glamp Out, the big sleep out under the expansive WonderDome.

And all of them get Celia’s stamp of approval – after all, she’s now our head of R&D.

So that’s our story. It seemed fitting to share especially as November is National Adoption Month. Our fingers are crossed that this Christmas we get to tick off the wish for adoption from Celia’s wish list. We’ll keep you posted.

If you'd like more information about adoption, mentoring or hosting older foster youth I encourage you to head over to Kidsave and see the wonderful work they do.

Did someone say glamping?

When we say we want to create a sleepover experience like no other, we mean it. Take our WonderDome. A luxurious outdoor overnight experience that takes glamping to the next level. With enough room to sleep 6 the WonderDome is perfect for teen birthdays or any excuse for a sleepover with the squad.

We've designed the WonderDome to be multipurpose and it can handle anything from sleepovers to a girl's night to a one of a kind dinner party. We even see a few uber romantic proposals taking place in the future. The possibilities are endless.

WonderTent Parties are Go.

Today was a momentous day for WonderTent Parties as we held our first event. With the old adage "Go big or go home" ringing in our ears we "went big" creating a special graduation party for some very special kids. With 12 (count 'em  12) WonderTents styled and the WonderDome fitted out, the kids suited up in outfits from our costume racks. A mix of superheroes and fairies spent the day having fun, eating hot dogs, chomping on popcorn, savoring ice cream cones and enjoying a day of games and activities.

It was a real joy to see the smiles on the kids' faces as they played in the WonderDome or chilled in a WonderTent. Not to mention the look of relief on the parents who got to enjoy the day with their kids and rediscover a sense of wonder themselves.

The end result: 22 happy kids and 40+ proud parents. A little bit bigger than our usual set up but it worked a treat.
